As Life Becomes More Complex - Let’s Remember how to Live More Simply
You may not remember a time when people grew their own food, raised their own meat, saved their own water, and ground their own grains for bread. But it wasn’t that long ago, and it gave folks more independence. There will probably come a time when these skills will, once again, be invaluable. Any movement towards self sufficiency gives you more control over your life. Food you can grow not only helps you save a dollar, but it gives you contol and by honoring organic practices we can play our part in healing the Earth. Whatever your reason for wanting to know more about “Traditional Arts”, Casita is committed to teaching and preserving these valuable skills that were once so central to our survival and overall well being.

Permaculture
In the simplest terms, we will start you on a journey of growing your food — in a way that is harmonious with nature. Permaculture is a philosophy this is very much in line with Islam — do not waste, be a good steward of the blessings given to us, and respect the cycles of the Earth. We will introduce you to the basics of growing food in a way that is self-sustaining and regenerative - for both your body and the earth.
Small Animal Husbandry
Have you ever dreamed of raising chickens, keeping bees, having sheep - a goat or two? It’s really not that difficult, and more importantly with commercial meat being so unhealthy, keeping animals is an empowering way to have access to quality, clean meat. Come and learn how to build a simple chicken coop, what types of fences are needed for small livestock, and some tricks on how to jump start your small animal adventure.
Putting Food By
There are so many reasons to store the fruits of the garden. For example, there is nothing like organic, sun ripened homegrown tomato sauce. Many of us have lost our connection with the earth, and our food. We don’t realize how many different sizes, types, and colors of produce God has gifted us with. Then when the pandemic bought empty grocery stores, we realized how fragile our food supply can be. Storing the harvest not only reduces our personal, carbon footprint — it is a cornerstone of living a more self-sufficient life.
Cooking From Scratch
Even if you work outside the home and feel pressed for time, cooking from the garden, and baking your own bread is a doable task. The benefits of cooking from scratch are too many to name. But, know that your body, your family, and your overall well being will benefit from food that is pure, and less laden with the chemicals and preservatives used in prepackaged, processed foods. Its not as hard as you may think. Come and let us show you how to use natural ingredients to reclaim the food we ingest and serve ourselves and our families.
Sustainable Housing
Everyone needs a home. How can we build something that utilizes that resources that are low cost, maybe even free for people who have, or hope to have a piece of property. Learn about this technique developed by Khalil Nadir, that leaves a very small foot print on the earth, and a very small footprint on our pocket.
We are working towards hosting a Superabdobe training - coming soon.
